The Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN/POTS) and ISDN network are due to cease in 2025, with active sales ceasing by 2020. No distinction is being made between domestic and business lines, with both due to end at the same time affecting business and residential customers equally.
The demise of the ‘traditional’ landline is unsurprising when we consider how advances in technology have impacted how we communicate. Social networks like Facebook and Twitter, Skype, and of course, the rise and rise of mobile telephony, SMS and all-in-one smartphone devices have dramatically widened, while increasingly personalising our communication choices.
The numbers paint a similar picture – voice call volumes for fixed lines are clearly in decline and fell by 9.2% to 74 billion minutes between 2014 and 2015 (Ofcom data), while Mobile grew by 3.9% over the same period to top 143 billion minutes. Similarly, total Mobile subscriptions increased by 2% to 91.5 million in 2015.
VoIP is an alternative to PSTN, carrying your calls across a broadband line. Many refer to VoIP telephony services as ‘Cloud’ or ‘Hosted’ telephony. It’s cheaper, geographically independent, and offers more features than PSTN. It’s these benefits that businesses enjoy – the ability to point, and re-point calls anywhere for business continuity, the ability to scale and add devices quickly, having access to calling features that enhance productivity, all while being a fraction of the cost of ‘traditional’ telephony. Research suggests that cloud adoption has increased 75% since 2010, a trend which no doubt is contributing to the end of PSTN.
